One team joins the latest HSOT girls basketball Top 25

Only one team from last week's HSOT Statewide Top 25 girls basketball rankings lost and dropped out this week. That was No. 25 New Hanover, which lost by a sizable margin to No. 17 Hoggard.

The team that has replaced New Hanover is O'Neal School, which is 19-1 this season. The Falcons' only loss came to an out-of-state school.

Elsewhere, Greensboro Day lost to an out-of-state school and remained at No. 9. High Point Christian dropped two spots after losing to Greensboro Day.

There are some changes to HSOT's Area Code Rankings, which are below the Top 25 in this article.

Here are a few things about how our rankings work in girls' basketball:

• Rankings are updated weekly and released on Monday
• All high schools in the state of North Carolina, excluding athletic training academies, are eligible for the statewide top 25
• There is a separate top 15 for the state's six area codes that is also updated weekly
• Rankings are paused during the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs
• Final rankings are released the week after the state championships
