FAA releases report for Orange County plane crash that left one person dead; no report released for Warren County plane crash

One person is dead after a small plane crashed in Orange County on Sunday. Another plane crash was confirmed in Warren County later in the afternoon by fire crews in the county.

One of two reports released Monday after two planes crash hours apart in Orange, Warren Counties

On Monday, federal investigators released their report in one of two planes crashes just 50 miles and two and a half hours apart Sunday afternoon that left one person dead and another person critically burned.

The first one happened in Orange County near Rougemont. According to the FAA report, the plane crashed under "unknown circumstances."

Two and a half hours later, another plane crash happened about 50 miles away in Warren County.

First crash in Orange County

A small plane crashed in Orange County on Sunday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that one person was on board. That person died, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The FAA said it was a single-engine Beechcraft 35 that crashed near Rougemont around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed John M. Bofinger, 68, died in the crash.

Highway Patrol believes Bofinger was the only occupant on the plane, but said the crash is still under investigation.

Sky 5 flew over the crash where it appears a small plane crashed into a patch of trees.

Emergency responders could be seen at the crash site.

In Broadcastify audio, one 911 caller said she witnessed a low-flying aircraft having engine trouble and then she could see smoke in the field where the plane crashed.

The NTSB will be investigating the crash.

Second crash in Warren County

The FAA confirmed another plane crash happened in Warren County Sunday afternoon, two and a half hours after the first crash.

According to the FAA, the crash happened around 2:45 p.m. when the single engine-Cessna 182 plane crashed while it was departing the Nocarva Airport in Macon. Authorities are currently not sure where the plane was heading.

One person suffered severe burns and was taken to the UNC Chapel Hill Burn Center and is currently in critical condition. According to John Branche, the Warren County Sheriff, the victim suffered "100% body burns" and is currently on life support.

As of 6:45 p.m., the person remains in critical condition.

Robby Ross, fire chief for the Churchill Five Forks Fire Department, said the victim was pulled from the plane by bystanders. Ross added it took his fire department 4 to 5 minutes to put the flames out.

The FAA said the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.
