Garner police on Friday asked the State Bureau of Investigation to take over a probe of money missing from the Garner Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Department officials informed town leaders last week of the missing money, which was uncovered during an outside audit of the department's books from July 2008 to June 2009.

The amount was initially believed to be about $10,000, but officials said Friday it was more than $300,000.

Officials said the employee alleged to be involved in the money's disappearance – identified as Amy Moore – has resigned.

An independent accounting firm has assumed control of the department's bookkeeping and check-writing functions as a more complete audit is done, officials said.

Although the department is overseen by a private board, Garner and Wake County provide it with more than $3 million a year.

Garner officials said the department's service haven't been affected by the loss of money or the investigation.
