A 3-year-old girl remained in critical condition Wednesday after she was accidentally shot in her Littleton home, authorities said.

Around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, deputies got a 911 call from 128 Hickey Hill Drive about a young child seriously injured.

“We received a call about a 3-year-old child that had received a gunshot wound,” said Lt. Bobby Martin, of the Halifax County Sheriff's office.

The girl was hit in the abdomen by a single bullet.

Investigators said she was home with both of her parents at the time, but declined to comment on specifics of how it happened.

Her name was not released and authorities have not said which hospital she is being treated at.

The initial report said investigators recovered a girl’s yellow toddler-sized shirt and a "bullet projectile" from the home.

Investigators said it was an accidental shooting and that it’s too early to tell if any charges will be filed.

“It’s by no means a closed case, we're continuing our investigation. Right now it’s the early stages and we're just looking out for the welfare of the child,” Martin said.
