Reward offered for information in Durham officer shooting

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest in a July 2 shooting into an apartment on Shannon Road that injured a Durham police officer.

Officer D.J. Youmans, 32, was shot while responding to a call about gunfire and a break-in at South Square Townhomes, 3300 Shannon Road. Youmans was struck in the abdomen between the bottom of his bulletproof vest and his gun belt. He was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment and remains hospitalized.

Thomas Rashawn Monroe, 23, of 3300 Shannon Road, Apt. 5-A, is accused of shooting Youmans. He was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and remains in custody at the Durham County jail under $250,000 bond.

The case is still under investigation, and police are still trying to identify other suspects in the shooting.

A group of officers and citizens will go door-to-door in the neighborhood on Wednesday, as part of a Project Safety Neighborhoods Community Response. Volunteers will be in the 3300 block of Shannon Road at 4:30 p.m.

Youmans joined the Durham Police Department about a month before the shooting. He previously worked with the New York Police Department for two years.

Emergency Chaplains Inc. and Cardinal State Bank have set up a fund for Youmans.
