Authorities were investigating the deaths of a man and a woman found inside a Durham apartment Saturday morning. The man was identified as Jamarcus Valentino Umstead, 24. Investigators were still trying Sunday to determine the woman's identity.

Durham police officers were called to assist with an emergency call at Beech Lake Apartments, Apartment 19-B, 4800 University Drive at approximately 10:54 a.m. Saturday, Durham police Capt. Ed Sarvis said.

Officers found the bodies inside the apartment. The causes of death were withheld.

Christian Farmer told WRAL News her long-time friend Umstead lived in the apartment where the bodies were discovered. Sarvis said a neighbor called 911. He did not disclose what was said during the call.

Jenna Wallis, who lives in the apartment building next door, said she thought she heard gun shots late Friday night.

“We are kind of close to the highway, so I thought it may have been a car backfiring or something," Wallis said. "Apparently it wasn't."

Residents said police told them not to worry because the deaths appeared to be an isolated incident.

Sarvis asked that anyone who might have seen anything out of the ordinary in the 12 or more hours prior to the bodies being found to call Durham police at 919-560-4440 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
