Officers Taken Off Patrol After Suspect Shooting
Two Durham police officers were placed on administrative duty Wednesday following the shooting death of a suspect in a weekend burglary.
Officers D.F. Rosser and J. Sandoval Jr. were responding to a break-in call Saturday evening in the 500 block of Holloway Street when they found an armed man coming out of a house, police said.
The man dropped the gun when ordered to do so, but two men in a Ford Taurus parked behind the house drove at the officers, police said. One of the officers suffered minor injuries when the car hit him in the leg.
Rosser and Sandoval fired shots at the vehicle, but the driver fled down Holloway Street, police said. The Taurus struck an Isuzu SUV near Mangum Street, flipped over and collided with a Honda Accord.
The driver of the Taurus, who was identified Wednesday as Raul Riva Aldamo, 34, of Greensboro, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Wednesday that preliminary reports indicate a gunshot wound was the cause of death.
Alonzo Olmeda Castillo and Luis Campo, whose ages and addresses weren't available, were charged with first-degree burglary, kidnapping and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon in the case.
Castillo was arrested at the house on Holloway Street, and Campo was in the vehicle with Aldamo, police said. Both men were being held in the Durham County Jail on $250,000 bonds.
The case is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Durham Police Department’s Professional Standards Division.
