The plan to turn North Carolina Wesleyan College into UNC-Rocky Mount is moving forward. There is a bill in the Legislature to start the process if that’s what the university system’s Board of Governors wants to do.

UNC President Erskine Bowles is supposed to get a study on the issue in a few weeks.

Sen A.B. Swindell, D-Nash, and Sen. Clark Jenkins, D-Edgecombe, co-sponsored the three-sentence legislation so it is ready to go if the decision is to move the private school into the state college system.

This week is their last chance to file such legislation.

If the board decides it wants marching orders for the assimilation, the bill tells them to start working on it Dec. 1 and to report by March 1, 2008, how it’s going.
