A Johnston County grand jury Monday indicted a Clayton man accused of killing his 4-year-old daughter last month.

John Patrick Violette, 37, faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the Jan. 12 death of his daughter, Katlin, inside their home at 2020 McKinnon Drive.

Violette's wife, Amber Violette, discovered the body when she returned home from work. The child's head had been severed from her body.

John Violette, who was arrested Jan. 13 in Washington D.C., is currently being held at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, where he has been undergoing mental evaluations.

Family members said he battled paranoid schizophrenia a decade before the slaying
