Durham may soon need a new police chief. Chief Steve Chalmers reportedly plans to leave his post late next year.

Chalmers has been Durham's police chief since January 2003. A graduate of N.C. A&T University and Hillside High School, Chalmers joined Durham's police department in 1975 and rose through the ranks from a public safety officer to being named one of two lieutenant colonels in September 2001, and then interm police chief in since February 2002.

Chalmers is credited with revamping the top-level administration of the department. However, he's recently endured criticism for his low profile during the Duke Lacrosse rape investigation.
