The pandemic expedited the integration of technology into education. The lessons learned over a compressed timeline can be used to ensure effective Chromebook usage.

"What would've taken us five or six years, we tried to do in one," said Harvey.

3. Nurture Chromebook care

The school system acknowledges that life happens, and some Chromebooks may experience wear and tear. Expect a replacement of around 5% annually.

"This is all your books in one, in some cases, and so a Chromebook that is not working or is damaged is is really a detriment to a student," said Harvey.

4. Flat surface usage

Teach your child the importance of using the Chromebook on a flat surface. This simple practice minimizes the risk of accidental falls and prevents unnecessary damage.

5. Mealtime etiquette

Avoid leaving the Chromebook out during mealtime. Protecting it from potential spills and stains is a key practice to maintain its functionality.

7. Identification labeling

"To make sure that if something happens to it, you know which device it was," said Harvey.

Accidental drops and spills are common mishaps. If this occurs, promptly turn off the device, close it, and contact your student's school for assistance.

"We'll make sure that you get a replacement that is working and safe as quickly as possible," said Harvey.

9. Download antivirus

Many parents ask, "does the Chromebook need antivirus?" While Chromebooks are designed to be secure, they are not immune to viruses. It would be advised to still use antivirus software to protect your device. You can use a browser extension, which often times are free.
