New site solves confusion for those trying to pay NC tolls

A problem 5 On Your Side told you about last year is getting fixed. This week, NC Quickpass is launching a new site to make paying off tolls more straight forward.

“We want to make our system and our website as easy as possible, we don’t want our customers to have to jump through a bunch of hoops to pay their tolls because time is the most important commodity,” said Logen Hodges, the director of communications and marketing for NC Quickpass.

If you’ve ever had an outstanding bill with the North Carolina Turnpike Authority there’s a chance you paid it off on the wrong website. In early 2022, Andrea Jost contacted WRAL 5 On Your Side after she received a late notice from NC Quickpass. Jost was confused. She had already paid weeks earlier but on a third party site called Doxo.

“From the wording on the site it looked like NC Quickpass partnered with them to do their payments,” Jost said.

But that wasn’t the case. Officials with NC Quickpass explained that thousands of people like Jost had paid their bills mistakenly through third- party sites, which charge extra fees and slow processing down. Those delays led to an estimated $100,000 in late fees for drivers who thought they had taken care of the bill.

5 On Your Side was able to get Jost’s late fees waived.

Since that time, the third-party Doxo site has removed the NC Quickpass logo, which confused Jost and others.

The new NC Quickpass site will make paying easier too. Users can simply type in their license plate to determine their charges.

The new updated site will be up and running by Feb. 25. NC Quickpass is delaying payment deadlines while the new site comes online.

The fastest and easiest way to pay tolls is to have a transponder in your car. Information on that is also on the NC Quickpass web site.
