How nursing homes are operating during the Moore County power outage

Moore County residents are impacted in so many ways by a targeted attack on two power stations in the county, including people who live in nursing homes.

The county has implemented a curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Monday night marks the third night without power for thousands of people in Moore County.

Sheila Ferguson is thinking about her younger brother Stacy, who's in a nursing home in Moore County that lost power.

“I’m concerned about the heating situation, the meals they are receiving and just what are they doing to keep the residents entertained at this time,” Ferguson said about her brother.

WRAL News reached out to another nursing home in Moore County that's also in the dark.

Penick Village CEO Chip Cromartie said his facility has been in the dark since Saturday. While Penick Village does not have a connection to Ferguson’s family, Cromartie offered his perspective about what happens at a nursing home during a blackout.

“This is something we plan for,” Cromartie said. “We have generators on site.”

Cromartie says nursing homes are required by the state to have a plan in place. He says they make sure they’re staff members are well taken care of so they can provide great care to the residents.

Cromartie also said visiting hours are still available even during the blackout.

“The majority of providers want the best for their residents,” Cromartie said.

As for Ferguson, she later received word that the nursing home Stacy is in is running on a generator, the lights are on and Stacy is doing well.

“He is in is a great facility,” Ferguson said of her brother. “They take good care of him. I know they are very busy at this time.”

One piece of advice WRAL News received Monday night, never hesitate to visit your loved one in a nursing home even in a blackout.
