Moms organize night for moms next month

Last year's Moms Night Out in the Triangle was organized a bit on the fly. But the event in downtown Apex drew about 75 people.

This year, organizers are going bigger, with a night planned at a Cary hotel with decadent desserts and lots of giveaways. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. May 6 at the Embassy Suites in Cary.

And it's an opportunity to support Nancy's Butterfly Fund. The fund honors Nancy Cooper, the Cary mom of two who was killed in 2008. Her husband is charged in her murder. All proceeds from the event will go to the group, which provides financial assistance to women and their children leaving abusive relationships.

"For any mom in our area who's been here over the last few years, Nancy Cooper's murder is raw," said Molly Gold, one of the Mom's Night Out organizers and founder of Go Mom!. "We're supporting another mom and supporting women to not have to suffer through violence and supporting kids so they don't have to suffer."

National Moms Nite Out was founded by Maria Bailey, an expert on marketing to moms. The Triangle event is one of many across the country. And local moms will be able to connect with others through Twitter and Skype. The party will be among those broadcast live on MomTV.com.

Gold said there will be at least a couple of thousand dollars in giveaways. Michele Little will do a live makeover that night. There will be pampering stations. And a lot more.

Gold hopes the move to Cary will open up the event so a lot more moms can attend. The hotel is right off Interstate 40.

"What we want moms to do is take time out for themselves," Gold told me.
