Man who escaped prison indicted as 'habitual felon'

A man who escaped from custody in western North Carolina and spent 10 days on the lam before his re-arrest in Raleigh was indicted Thursday in Wake County on a habitual felon charge.

Xavier Hosea Shaw, 45, was serving time for kidnapping and robbery convictions when he escaped June 30 from an inmate crew building an addition to Alexander Correctional Institution in western North Carolina. He hid inside a truck at the work site, authorities said.

Department of Correction staff in Alexander County got a tip that Shaw was in Raleigh and sent a 30-member Prison Emergency Response Team and five K-9 squads to search for him.
Xavier Shaw's mother and sister live in the area, and his sister said they cooperated with the search.

Raleigh police officers captured Shaw on July 11 near New Bern Avenue and New Hope Church Road, nearly 20 miles away from his family's home.

Friday was Shaw’s first court appearance since his capture.
