A Durham man who stepped out to look at his damaged vehicle was struck and killed by two vehicles on Interstate 40 just after midnight Saturday.

Rashard Addison, 28, lost control of his 2002 Ford Explorer while driving west on I-40 near Miami Boulevard around 12:20 a.m. The Explorer swerved across several lanes and overturned twice before coming to a rest upright, still in the westbound lanes.

Addison got out of the Explorer and was hit by a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Catherine Joyce, 49, of Burlington. He was struck again by a 1996 Mercury Sable driven by Tommy Bridges, 51, of Sikeston, Missouri.

Authorities pronounced Addison dead at the scene.

The Explorer and Santa Fe were total losses, while the Sable sustained minor damage.

Durham police continue to investigate the accident.

I-40 traffic was backed up for about four hours.
