A Goldsboro man was found dead Tuesday after authorities said his vehicle got caught in floodwaters from Hurricane Matthew.

Goldsboro police said officers responded to a vehicle found in a wooded creek area in the 2500 block of Wayne Memorial Drive at about 4:45 p.m. and found the body of Lemuel Frank Kornegay, 54, inside the vehicle.

Investigators determined that Kornegay was driving south on Wayne Memorial Drive on Saturday at about 7 p.m. when his vehicle was disabled in the roadway due to the high rushing waters from Hurricane Matthew. The vehicle was swept into a creek bed on the east side of the road and carried downstream into the woods, stranding him, authorities said.

Police said Kornegay was unable to escape the vehicle and died as a result.
