Woman shot in apparent domestic violence dispute

Garner police have charged a man with murder in the Sunday night shooting of a woman at her home.

Officers responded around 10:45 p.m. to a domestic violence call at 827-D Delta St., where they found Latasha Renee Pierce, 36, shot in the head.

She was taken to WakeMed, where she died early Monday.

Winston Lewis, 35, of Garner, was taken into custody Sunday night and later charged in the case.

Neighbors said Lewis had lived at Pierce's home for a couple of months and that they believe he was her boyfriend.

A man reporting the shooting to 911 said the victim was his girlfriend but that he did not live at the home. He could not say how Pierce had been shot, according to the call. When asked if he shot her, the man said no.

Investigators, however, have not said how Pierce and Lewis knew each other.

Neighbors said Pierce was kind and well-known in the neighborhood. Her adult son and a 2-year-old grandchild also lived in the home, they said.
