Man accused of kidnapping, assaulting, robbing Barton student

Wilson police arrested a 20-year-old man Monday and charged him with kidnapping, sexually assaulting and robbing a Barton College student Sunday night.

Police say Jodeci Raeshawn Brinkley, of 408 Lee St. NE, kidnapped the woman from 200 A C College Drive and forced her to drive to an unknown location in Wilson County, where he sexually assaulted her.

He then forced her to drive to a bank in Wilson and get money from an ATM before letting her go, police said. Brinkley and the woman did not know each other, officials said.

Barton College President Norval Kneten released a statement Tuesday, saying the "student is recuperating and in the care of her family."

George Solan, Barton College Vice president for Student Affairs, said Brinkley had been warned to stay off campus and was issued a citation twice when he came back.

 "I feel let down," Solan said. "As a vice president, as a chief advocate for students, that we have not had the opportunity to enforce the law that helps campus remain safe. In other words, the court systems have not followed through with our actions, to my knowledge."

Brinkley's sister, Johnneice Crandell, said the family is struggling with the allegations against the man they call "Jo Jo." They have many questions about what allegedly happened.

"I couldn't even sleep last night. It's so heavy on my heart, it's shocking," she said.

Brinkley is being held on a $100,000 secured bond. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
