School officials found a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol in a juvenile student's backpack and an extended magazine with five rounds, marijuana, and scales in the student's car.

A Gray's Creek High School student was charged Tuesday with bringing a weapon to campus.

School officials say they received an anonymous tip of a possible weapon on campus. A Cumberland County Sheriff's Office school resource officer searched a student's locker and found a loaded Taurus 9mm in a backpack.

A search of the student's car yielded an extended magazine with five rounds, marijuana and scales.

"I hope, I hope he can get some help. I don't want him in trouble too much," Jackson Karcher, Gray's Creek High School student, said.

Dajuan Lasane and Karcher know the student who had the weapon and say he is a good kid.

"I understand that he has some trouble going on and he just had to keep it as a protective measure. It should not have been brought on to school campus," Lasane said. "Maybe, there's something that we don't know that that's going on. So I can't paint him as a criminal or anything."

Youth Services Detectives filed a petition charging the juvenile with possession of a firearm on campus and possession of marijuana.

"I mean, he's a nice kid," Karcher said. "I don't think you want it to hurt anybody at school, but I think that he had to hide it somewhere. Maybe from his parents or someone."

Students say they don't feel unsafe after the incident and wish their classmate the best.

"He was just minding his business and it just went the wrong way because he did the wrong action," Lasane said. "He just has to take accountability for his actions."

The juvenile is in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
