Jess Anderson to become next Chapel Hill mayor, defeats Adam Searing

Jess Anderson is set to serve as the new mayor of Chapel Hill after defeating Adam Searing in Tuesday's election.

With 100% of the precincts reporting, Anderson received 7,092 votes (59%) and Searing has 4,943 votes (41%).

Anderson is set to replace Pam Hemminger as mayor.

Hemminger served Chapel Hill across four terms. She opted not to seek a fifth term.

Both Anderson and Searing are on the Chapel Hill Town Council.

Anderson was elected to the Chapel Hill Town Council in 2015 and served as mayor pro tempore from 2017-2019. She is a professor of the practice at the University North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Public Policy Department. Previously, Anderson was a senior policy analyst at the SERVE Center at UNC Greensboro where she conducted needs assessments for school districts in North Carolina and provided technical assistance to communities around the country working to end youth homelessness.

Searing has served on the Chapel Hilll Town Council since 2021. He is a public interest lawyer, lobbyist and health advocate.
