If you call 911 by accident, don't hang up!

The city of Raleigh is asking people who accidentally call 911 to stay on the line and tell the dispatcher everything is alright.

If a caller hangs up on 911, they must be contacted to make sure there is no emergency, according to Dominick Nutter, director of the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center.

This could interrupt dispatchers and law enforcement officers who could be otherwise responding to real emergencies.

It is a myth that people who dial 911 mistakenly will get in trouble. Many people accidentally dial 911 when they are trying to enter Raleigh's area code, 919, the city explains.

What if I call and 911 doesn't answer?

If you call 911 and get no answer, stay on the line. The city of Raleigh said calls will be answered.

In May, the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center reported 39 vacancies among 129 total jobs.

“When we have increased vacancies, there is additional stress, and our team is working very diligently to work through these times,” said Nutter.

Nutter said the starting pay for a telecommunicator is $44,538.
