Historic Oak View's Heritage Day this weekend

One of my very favorite annual events in the Triangle is this Saturday at Historic Oak View County Park in Raleigh.

Heritage Day is a lot like an old-time county fair with a focus on animals, crafts, antique farm equipment displays, cane pole fishing, live entertainment and more. Kids involved in 4-H will be there with their animals and projects. And there are even rides - though horse-drawn carriage rides might not be the first thing that comes to your child's mind when you mention "fair" and "rides" in the same sentence.

Either way, it's just a lot of good old-fashioned fun. And Historic Oak View County Park, with its historic buildings and open space, is a nice place to roam. Heritage Day is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday. It's free.

Each year, the Capital Quilters Guild presents a display of its quilts, which are part of an auction that starts at 2 p.m. Saturday. The guild shares the net proceeds of the auction; sales of small quilted and craft items; and sales of tickets for a raffle quilt each year with a local charity. This year, it's InterAct of Wake County, which provides services to survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault.

Raffle tickets are being sold at InterAct's Pass It On Too Thrift Store, 1012 Oberlin Rd. in Raleigh. The store's hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays and Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. You can also purchase them through the guild.
