As prices for eggs soar due to a shortage related to the avian flu, Harris Teeter is limiting the number of cartons customers can purchase while shopping online.

All brands of eggs in 12-count and 18-count cartons are limited to three cartons per customer online, according to Harris Teeter's website.

A spokesperson told WRAL Smart Shopper Harris Teeter is not limiting egg purchases in all stores.

"Online shopping promotions, item limits, etc. are not automatically applicable to the store environment," the statement read. "Harris Teeter will continue to inform customers of in-store quantity limits at-shelf."

Some stores will have limits for in-store egg purchases, and any limits will be posted on the shelf.

WRAL Smart Shopper compares egg prices and other grocery staples weekly at the most popular grocery stores in the Triangle, including Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Wegmans and Aldi.

As of Friday, the lowest price on a dozen large white eggs was $2.89 found at the Lowes Foods at Brier Creek Parkway.

In recent days, customers have reported seeing egg prices as high as $8.

According to WRAL Smart Shopper Faye Prosser, in addition to eggs, stores are also limiting high-demand items like meat.

"While the egg limits are an unfortunate result of the avian flu egg shortage, this is not the only product with purchase limits in stores right now," Prosser explained.

This week, for example, ground beef on sale at Harris Teeter is limited to four per person.
