Authorities seized 21 dogs and 68 marijuana plants Sunday from a Roanoke Rapids home that was allegedly used for dog fighting.

Halifax County sheriff’s deputies said Monday they conducted an investigation on the property, at 1045 Stack Powell Road, after receiving information from confidential sources about potential dog fighting in the area.

Deputies went to the property Friday night and found a large number of cars in the yard and lights on in a shed behind the residence. Deputies said several people ran from the area when they arrived.

Deputies obtained a search warrant and worked with animal control officers to seize 19 pit bulls and two puppies, a dog fighting pen, dog training weights, syringes and animal medications. Some of the dogs have injuries consistent with dog fighting, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies also found a room inside the shed with 68 marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia.

Erica Gary, 40, and Zhaqwaun Jevontae Gary, 19, both of Roanoke Rapids, were each charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, manufacture marijuana, felony possession of marijuana and maintaining a vehicle/dwelling place for controlled substance.

It's unclear if the two are related.

Zhaqwaun Gary was jailed under a $20,000 bond and scheduled for a court appearance June 5. Erica Gary was jailed under a $25,000 bond.
