A 2-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon after she found a loaded handgun and accidentally shot herself, Fayetteville police said.

Officers responding to the home in the 2600 block of Graham Road found the girl at about 12:30 p.m. She was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where she later died.

Fayetteville police have not released her name.

Byron Brown lives next door in the duplex where the shooting happened.

"She would always come to to the fence line and play with my dog. Every time they walked by, she would stop by and speak to us and everything," he said.

Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department's Homicide Unit were at the home Saturday afternoon investigating the incident.

According to police, the girl was home with her aunt and grandmother at the time of the shooting. No one else inside the home was injured.

"There are so many unanswered questions right now running through my mind. You know, to lose a 2-year-old, to lose anybody, but to lose a 2-year-old baby who hasn't even lived yet. This is horrific," Brown said.

"She meant the world to them. They took care of her. They loved her and everything, and for something like this to happen – it's devastating," he added.

According to police, no charges have been filed and there have been no arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
