Fayetteville woman pleads guilty in hit-and-run that killed soldier

A Fayetteville woman pleaded guilty Thursday to a hit-and-run crash on Fort Bragg last year that killed a soldier.

Sarah Ashley Rogers, 21, pleaded guilty in federal court to involuntary manslaughter and driving while impaired in the Dec. 8 death of Pfc. Richard B. Powell. She will be sentenced later.

Powell, 20, of Mobile, Ala., was walking along Bragg Boulevard on post when he was struck and killed near Guber Road. Family members said he was going to a grocery store when he was hit.

Prosecutors said Rogers, who was arrested at a nearby DWI checkpoint, had a blood-alcohol content above 0.08, the level at which drivers are considered impaired in North Carolina.

Powell was assigned to the 101st Chemical Company of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade.
