A grand jury on Tuesday indicted a former Durham County deputy on charges that he stole money used in undercover drug operations.

Derek O'Mary, who was a lieutenant with the Durham County Sheriff's Office, was indicted on 26 charges of embezzlement involving "buy funds" used by the department's vice officers. He also was indicted on charges that he stole some drug evidence from the department.

There was no word on how much money was taken or when the alleged thefts occurred.

The State Bureau of Investigation pursued the case, which will be handled by the Special Prosecutions Unit within the state Attorney General's Office.
