Live: Vehicle partially submerged in Apex pond

A driver crashed into a pond in Apex on Saturday morning, leaving their vehicle partially submerged.

The vehicle was sitting down a small embankment and in a pond in the 1200 block of Key Ring Drive around 10:30 a.m.

Police believe the driver had a medical episode that caused them to run off the roadway. The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of their medical condition, according to police.

The pond is not far from Salem Street and appears to be near a preschool and a church.

The airbag had deployed, and the front bumper and wheels were damaged and full of mud.

A witness told WRAL News they saw "a heavy police and fire presence" around 10 a.m. near Thales Academy, which was centered around the pond and round-about.

Police say at this time no injuries or damage have been reported as a result of the vehicle leaving the roadway.
