Dix Park Plaza and Play design unveiled

On Tuesday, a first glimpse was given for a significant project coming together at Dix Park.

The Plaza and Play project has been in the works for years. It's expected to overhaul a portion of the 300-acre park overlooking downtown Raleigh.

"Dix Park is such a rare opportunity,” Raleigh park planner Grayson Maughan said. “[It] is so beautiful as it is, but we are given this opportunity to transform it into a really great park.”

Once approved, it'll sit along 18 acres where a dog park is now located.

Planners will announce the new location of the dog park in September. Construction will begin next summer, and it is expected to take about two years to build.

The master plan for Dix Park was adopted unanimously by the Raleigh City Council in 2019, and the Plaza and Play project is the first major implementation of that plan, said Maughan. There’s about a year left in the planning process before the design is finalized.

Features of the Plaza and Play project include interactive water features and a place for both children and adults to enjoy.

"We have some really exciting play features with the waterfall wall built from local stone material, custom-designed play elements [including] towers, interactive water features and a place for not only children to come and play, but for adults to come and play, too," said Maughan.

Currently, officials are working on securing funding for the building site.
