Former Rocky Mount police cadet Shirley Moore takes a polygraph test. Moore charges she had an affair with the department's police chief and was forced to resign after his wife found out.

A former police cadet, who claims she lost her job over an affair with the police chief, filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the city of Rocky Mount and its police chief.

Shirley Moore claims Chief John Manley had an affair with her, paid for an abortion, and then forced her to resign last year.

Moore failed portions of a WRAL sponsored polygraph test. Her answers about the affair came back inconclusive.

The city's own investigation cleared Manley in May.

Moore and her husband filed the suit in civil court.

It seeks damages for severe emotional distress, discrimination and alienation of affection.
