Brawley/Tillis feud not over

If an email sent to House members Thursday is any indication, the feud between former Finance Committee Chairman Robert Brawley and House Speaker Thom Tillis is far from over.

Brawley, a 10-term Republican from Iredell, handed back his gavel Wednesday. His resignation letter was read aloud and entered into the House journal, causing a stir among Republicans and Democrats alike. 

The letter, a scathing list of grievances and accusations, was a rare public show of discord within the House majority leadership. 

Tillis spokesman Jordan Shaw said Wednesday that he believed Brawley's resignation from his chairmanship was "a mutual decision." 

An email Brawley sent to all House members early Thursday morning seems to indicate otherwise.

The speaker is a gentleman and scholar but he and I have a serious difference on some political, constitutional and procedural issues . During a discussion of our differences, he said he wanted me to return my gavel and no longer serve as a chair of finance. I accepted and as he requested gave him a letter I had been working on to discuss with him privately but he wanted it read into the journal. I apologize for any discomfort caused any of you and would have preferred not to air our differences but was told to turn in my gavel and the letter during session to be read into the journal. I expect to still be a representative and will fight to have the voice of District 95 heard, I look forward to working with you as a legislator on equal footing. I m available for discussion and I do appreciate the good we have and will continue to accomplish but we need some fresh air also. Have a great day.

Shaw said Tillis wouldn't have a comment on Brawley's letter. There was no indication whether the latest email would change that stance.
