Here are the best places to sled in Raleigh, Durham, Cary

Saturday's snow day is a perfect one for sledding, and the first time in years we've had just-right conditions: Weekend snow, fluffy flakes, plenty of power.

And with temperatures expected to stay below freezing throughout the day, Sunday could be set up for sledding too.

Prepare for your outing with a helmet, a steerable sled and other tips to make sure you end up at the bottom of the hill, not in the emergency room.

Best places to sled in Raleigh, Cary, Wake Forest

WRAL has spec'd out some of the best sledding sites. If you live in Raleigh, Cary or Chapel Hill, there is sure to be one near you.

  • Bond Park, 801 High House Rd., Cary. This is one of the big ones. Just get there early to get a piece of the snow.
  • Dorothea Dix Hospital off Western Boulevard in Raleigh. A long-time favorite for many in Raleigh.
  • Fletcher Park, 802 Clay St., Raleigh and also near the intersection of Peace Street and Glenwood Avenue.
  • Joyner Park, 701 Harris Rd., Wake Forest. I haven't heard that people sled here. But when I did a review of it, I thought that there were some pretty decent sledding possibilities here.
  • Duke Park, 106 W. Knox St. in Durham, is a good area (just watch out for the trees). .
  • Chapel Hill Community Center, 120 South Estes Dr. in Chapel Hill. There's a nice little hill next to the playground.

There are plenty of neighborhood favorites at well.

After your day outdoors, warm up with a family-friendly hot drink or indulge in some snow cream.
