Berger coy about interest in US Senate run

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger deflected speculation Wednesday about a possible U.S. Senate bid in two years, saying he's focusing on the legislative session that gets underway in two weeks.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan is up for re-election in 2014, and at least one recent poll show tepid support among North Carolinians for a second term.

Berger is seen as a potential Republican foe for Hagan, but he said he's not looking past the session, which will focus on tax reform, education reform and a voter ID requirement, among other issues.

"There have been some folks who have approached me about that, but I'm focused on what we're doing in the General Assembly at this time," he said at a news conference. "I am not running for any other office at this time."
