Benson teen charged in fatal wreck

A Johnston County teenager was charged Sunday in connection with a crash that killed his friend.

Steven "Drew" Smith, 17, and Dennis Dewitt, also 17, were on their way to a turkey shoot Friday night when Dewitt's truck drove off Zacks Mill Road, near N.C. Highway 50.

Smith died at the scene. Emergency medical crews took Dewitt to WakeMed, where he was treated and released.

Dewitt was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed, the state Highway Patrol said.
