The 12,000-square-foot destination features a store, Bistro, salon and more.

Lovers of all things American Girl in the Triangle will no longer have to make the trek to Atlanta or Washington, D.C., for a new 'do for their dolls or to enjoy a special tea with their mini me.

The popular retailer has a new store at SouthPark mall in Charlotte. More than 7,000 people attended last weekend's grand opening of the 12,000-square-foot destination, which includes a store with all manner of American Girl products; a 25-seat Bistro where visitors can enjoy lunch, dinner, tea or dessert; and a Doll Hair Salon where dolls can get a little refurbishment. It's also a popular spot for birthday parties and other special occasions.

The store, according to a press release, offers a full selection of the brand's historical and contemporary dolls; plus doll outfits; accessories; clothing for girls so they can dress like their doll; books and more. In the Doll Hair Salon, girls can choose from a menu of salon services, including ponytails, pampering and pierced ears for their dolls.

There's also a "Creativi-tees" boutique where girls, according to the release, can design their own T-shirts for themselves and their dolls.

The store will offer a schedule of events and activities based on the American Girl characters and books all year.

The Bistro serves up dishes like Cheesy Cheese Pizza and Best-Ever Chicken Tenders, along with selections such as Herb-Roasted Salmon with Lemon Beurre Blanc. Girls can sit right next to their dolls who are seated in what American Girl calls "treat seats." The dolls even get their own doll-sized menus.

Private party rooms and packages are available with games, crafts, food and more.

I'm guessing that the restaurant and party rooms are filling up pretty fast. To make dining or party reservations, call 877-247-5223.

American Girl offers dolls, books and accessories with historical and contemporary story lines. Most dolls sell for more than $100. Even if you're not in the market for a doll, I do recommend the books for young readers.

SouthPark is at 4400 Shannon Rd. in Charlotte. It's a little less than three hours from the Triangle.
