An 18-year-old man died after being pulled from the ocean at Nags Head on Wednesday.

Just before 3 p.m., Nags Head's Fire and Rescue and police officers arrived at the Gull Street public beach access in the on South Virginia Dare Trail for three swimmers in distress.

Two swimmers returned to shore, with one being helped by a Nags Head lifeguard. Both were taken to the Outer Banks Hospital.

A Nags Head police officer deployed a drone and found the other swimmer. Ibrahim Salam Sankoh, 18, was brought to shore by a Nags Head lifeguard and taken to the hospital.

Unfortunately, Sankoh was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.

"The town's thoughts are with the man’s family and friends after this tragic event," a release from the Town of Nags Head read.

Sankoh was visiting from Columbus, Ohio.
