RALEIGH, N.C. — A Triangle-area sports league – Stonewall Raleigh – hosted a fundraiser Saturday for the LGBT Center of Central Florida in honor of the victims who died in the tragic Orlando nightclub shooting.

Cities with Stonewall leagues are hosting events across the country with a goal of reaching a combined $15,000 to give directly to the LGBT Center of Central Florida. The national organization said it will match up to half of the funds.

“Especially in North Carolina recently, I think this community has been pushed down a little bit, or could get down on themselves, so just to see the response – everybody coming together in a time of need – it’s just very encouraging,” said Jonathan Melton.

Members of the league said they felt compelled to raise money for the victim’s families because they feel it could have been them.

“This could have been us. It could have been our safe space that was invaded, so we really thought it was important to show this community support, because we would want the same support back if it had been us,” said Britt Ellis.

The LGBT Center of Central Florida has focused its resources on the victims’ friends and family, including basic needs and counseling.
