ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina state trooper was struck by a car during a traffic stop in Madison County Tuesday afternoon, according to local media reports.

WSPA News in Spartanburg, S.C., is reporting that Trooper Matt Mitchell was hit on N.C. Highway 19 near Crooked Creek Road shortly before 5 p.m.

He was seriously injured and taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he was in critical condition early Wednesday.

Mitchell is assigned to the Highway Patrol's Burnsville district, which covers about six western North Carolina counties.
