State Rep. Larry Bell says he won't seek re-election

Posted April 17

— A veteran North Carolina state House member says he won't seek re-election when his latest term expires, saying it's time for someone new to take his seat.

Democratic Rep. Larry Bell of Sampson County is now in his ninth two-year term, running through 2018. The 77-year-old retired educator told The Sampson Independent (http://bit.ly/2oQotMd ) that an "age factor" went into his decision and that he wanted to leave on his own terms.

Bell's 21st House District covers parts of Sampson, Duplin and Wayne counties. The public schools and pension matters have been among Bell's policy interests within the General Assembly.

Bell says he's writing a book about his experiences. His career outside the House has included time as a county commissioner, teacher, principal and schools superintendent.
