DURHAM, N.C. — State regulators have granted conditional approval for a $596 million dollar expansion at Duke University Hospital.

The proposal would add 548,420 square feet of space and create as many as 1,000 jobs, officials said.

New facilities would include 16 operating suites. Duke also wants to modernize 160 of its authorized 924 beds, turning those into four 24-bed intensive care units and two 32-bed units for intermediate, or step-down, care.

The hospital plans to break ground this fall.
