MAURY, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate at a prison in Greene County, officials said Tuesday.

Staff members at Maury Correctional Institution found Charles Branch unresponsive in his cell Monday morning. Paramedics transported Branch to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Branch, 40, was serving eight to 11 years for convictions in Johnston County as a habitual felon and driving while intoxicated.
