— State regulators are investigating the Durham County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and whether its general manager has been steering contracts to friends of board members.

North Carolina ABC Commission administrator Mike Herring requested in May that the Division of Alcohol Law Enforcement conduct the investigation, officials said.

In addition to Durham County contracts, officials said ALE is reviewing the hiring of county ABC general manager Emily Page and the use of agency credit cards by Durham ABC board members and employees.

The state ABC Commission regulates the sale of alcohol, and county boards are in charge of selling bottled liquor in their local jurisdictions.

"Why would you privatize a system that would put “for profit” businesses in charge of liquor? Look how many places sell beer and wine to minors. All we need now is a greedy business owner pushing booze to our kids. Why do you think it’s called Alcoholic Beverage Control???" - workouttime

You do realize that the states with privatized liquor stores have the lowest rates of problems with underage drinkers acquiring hard liquor (in bottle form - not talking about drinks at a bar).

There are lots of state agencies that need to be looked into.I agree why do they need credit cards in the first place. Not surprising at all. Like the now famous," day treatment clinics" giving treatment? another mess and nobody looking.. just my opinion.

Why would APPOINTED "Board members" have credit cards in the name of the Durham ABC Board in the first place ?
They are NOT employees and don't WORK there ... Their role is ADVISORY, only. HUGE red flag there !

allinfantsareatheists: I agree with you 100%. The government should get out of the business of selling liquor; leave that to private merchants that already do a fine job with beer and wine.

I can think of nothing more grotesque than the state being in the booze business.
