State Highway Patrol: Trooper involved in fatal shooting in Durham

Durham, N.C. — An early-morning traffic stop in Durham County Friday led to an "armed confrontation" and the death of the driver, according to authorities.
Shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, the State Highway Patrol attempted to stop an erratic driver near U.S. 501 and Duke Street in Durham. According to the highway patrol, the suspect led the trooper on a brief chase in the vehicle before attempting to flee on foot.
Details of the shooting were not released. The suspect was transported to Duke Regional Hospital where he died.
The trooper has been on standard paid administrative leave. The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the details of the incident.
