RALEIGH, N.C. — The number of flu-related deaths in North Carolina so far this season has surpassed last year’s number, according to data released Thursday by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Fifteen more people died from flu in the week ending Jan. 17, bringing the total to 114 since the season began in October.

Last year, 107 people in North Carolina died from flu during the season, which lasts until May.

While the current total is higher than last year, the number of deaths being reported each week has been on the decline. Experts say that indicates the season likely has peaked, although they caution residents to remain vigilant against the spread of the virus.

All of those who died last week were adults, according to state figures. Information on gender and location was not provided.

The number of deaths reported each week is updated as more positive influenza tests are returned.
