Raleigh, N.C. — Fairgoers can gain free entry to the N.C. State Fair on Thursday if they're willing to make a donation to help the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Five cans of Food Lion brand food can be exchanged for one free admission ticket all day.
Jennifer Caslin, with the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, said organizers hope to raise about 210,000 pounds of food.
"Fairgoers are always great to us and very generous," Caslin said.
Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the Fair, in its 12th year, is one of the largest one-day canned-food drives in the state. Since 1993, more than 4.3 million pounds of food have been donated by fairgoers.
The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina distributes food to needy people in a 34-county area surrounding Raleigh and also helps support Second Harvest Food Banks in Fayetteville, Winston-Salem and Elizabeth City.
"In our state alone, about 1 in 5 people don't know where their next meal is coming from," Caslin said. "So this is a big help."
