RALEIGH, N.C. — Attendance at the North Carolina State Fair continued to be down slightly three days after the gates first opened.

Preliminary numbers show that 3,071 fewer people attended the first three days of the fair this year than in 2006. Total attendance for the three-day period was 236,187.

The biggest drop came on Sunday when 87,670 people passed through the gate – down 4,098 from last year. Opening day attendance was down by only 532 but posted the lowest number since 2001.

Saturday saw a gain of 1,559 on last year's attendance, with a total of 96,522 fairgoers.

Before the fair opened, organizers said they hoped good weather and the largest midway in North America would draw a record 1 million visitors this year. The 2006 State Fair was attended by 785,956 people.

Admission prices are $1 higher than a year ago, and sheets of ride tickets have six fewer tickets.
