State Capitol offers behind the scenes tours for history buffs

Posted January 21, 2014

Occupy Raleigh welcomed other groups to share the message of economic injustice Saturday at the NC State Capitol.

For parents and their young history and design buffs:

The State Capitol in downtown Raleigh will hold behind the scenes tours to see areas of the historic building that are rarely open to the public. The so-called Signature Discovery Tour will include stops in the governor's suite, old treasurer's vault, the outdoor porticos and some of the attic space.

The one-hour tours are available by reservation only. The first is 10 a.m.., Feb. 1. Another is scheduled for 1 p.m., April 26. Participants must be age 10 or older. Also know that you'll be walking up stairs and in confined spaces. Tickets are $15 each. To reserve your spot, call the Capitol at 919-733-4994.

I'm interested how the state can charge a fee to see additional areas of an public building already supported by taxpayers.
