The N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh is again offering weekly family-friendly tours on the weekends.
The 30-minute tours are at 10:30 a.m., Saturdays and Sundays. The tours had been each weekend, but had been switched to a monthly schedule.

Museum staff tell me that they boosted the tour offerings because of demand and because they wanted to offer something for families every weekend. These free tours are designed for kids ages 5 to 11 and their adults. A museum guide takes visitors through the galleries for discussion and activities.

The themes are switched up each month. This month's theme is portraits and people. In November, it's food and family.

The tours are a great introduction for kids to the art and the museum. They also make for fantastic activities when extended family or friends are in town, especially when coupled with a walk through Museum Park and the rest of the galleries.

These are free. No pre-registration is required. They are offered on a first come,  first served basis. Meet at the West Building Information desk. Admission to the museum is free (tickets are required for some special exhibits).

The museum also offers regular Saturday programs for kids and an excellent preschool program during the week called "What's in the Box?." A Fall Family Day is set for 1 p.m., Nov. 1.
