Office Depot

Staples, the largest office supply store in the country, is buying Office Depot/Office Max for $6.3 billion. If federal regulators approve the purchase, Staples hopes to complete the sale by the end of this year.

Office Depot merged with Office Max in late 2013 decreasing the office supply competition.  This sale will result in even less competition, at least the brick-and-morter kind. Savvy shoppers are already wondering what this will mean for those fabulous back-to-school deals in August every year. Will we have any more 1-cent and 25-cent deals on everything from crayons to rulers to markers?  That remains to be seen. If there is no longer any brick and mortar competition for Staples, those stock-up deals may be long gone.

What do you think about the sale?
