Staples buying Office Depot/Office Max

Posted February 6, 2015

Office Depot

Staples, the largest office supply store in the country, is buying Office Depot/Office Max for $6.3 billion. If federal regulators approve the purchase, Staples hopes to complete the sale by the end of this year.

Office Depot merged with Office Max in late 2013 decreasing the office supply competition.  This sale will result in even less competition, at least the brick-and-morter kind. Savvy shoppers are already wondering what this will mean for those fabulous back-to-school deals in August every year. Will we have any more 1-cent and 25-cent deals on everything from crayons to rulers to markers?  That remains to be seen. If there is no longer any brick and mortar competition for Staples, those stock-up deals may be long gone.

What do you think about the sale?

I am concerned . The selection at both stores ( or should I saw all 3 - Office Max ?) has been limited in recent years .
Frequently when I ask for certain items I am usually told to check website or the item is in another store .
Staples is closer for me so it is where I go - I have nothing against the other stores just the inconvenience of distance .
Staples price matching policy has gotten me some GREAT deals.
I just hope those deals continue .
I do wish Staples offered rainchecks -

Office Depot was my favorite & Staples my least favorite. They always had great deals - especially in December. We went to Office Depot on Thanksgiving night to get a case they had on sale for an IPad mini. I did not read the "fine print" in the ad & the sale on the case was for Black Friday. I got the items that were on sale for Thanksgiving Day & while standing in the check out line the manager came up to me & told me the IPad case was waiting for me at the register! I told him he was the best Elf Santa ever had. I thought that was great customer service to offer to let me purchase the item ahead of time! We also got a great deal on a laser printer at Office Depot.

losltp - You will probably be able to keep or redeem your rewards and won't just lose them after the sale. I saw that about Radio Shack. Not all stores are closing but many will be going out of business.

I am very surprised by this - especially since Office Depot/Office Max merged not that long ago !
I am hoping it does not reduce the deals we have to choose from anytime !
I hope they will allow a merger of the rewards programs since I have rewards on both right now
Radio Shack had filed chapter 13 - may be some good deals there soon !
